The first conference of the Nordic Roadmap Phase 2 was a great success! Companies and organizations from across the Nordics gathered to learn and discuss how to move green shipping corridors from ambition into realization. Speakers from governmental bodies, ports, industry and academia shared valuable insights and perspectives on the topic.
The purpose of the conference was to bring the together key stakeholders across the entire green shipping corridor value chain – including policymakers, ports, fuel producers, shipowners, financial actors and research organisations. The key objective was to build a clearer understanding of what is required to realise green shipping corridors in practice.
Key takeways:
- Progress in underway: Since phase 1, tangible progress has been made, and developments are moving in the right direction. However, there is still plenty of work to be done.
- Industry readiness vs. cost gap: The maritime industry is preparing for the transition; however, tools are still missing when it comes to closing the cost gap.
- Policy and funding opportunities: EU funding opportunities should continue to be explored. New policy proposals are also being explored at national level, for example in Sweden.
- Risk sharing is essential: Let industry lead the way but don’t let first movers carry system risk alone. Use public funding to de‑risk, not to replace markets.
- The role of ports: Ports are key enablers of green shipping corridors, particularly through their role as future energy hubs.
- Nordic port engagement: Several Nordic ports are active in the development of Nordic green shipping corridors and are interested in acting as system integrators and not only infrastructure providers.
- Collaboration remains critical: Continued collaboration is key including neutral platforms with real mandates.
The conference was divided into three main parts:
- Status Green Shipping Corridors and support for alternative marine fuels
- Outlook: Resilience and marine fuels
- From vision to investment – how to realise a green shipping corridor
- Next steps for realising Green Shipping Corridors in the Nordics
